With a population around 2000, Gold Beach, Coastal Oregon, is hardly a bustling metropolis. But the amount of attractions, shops, restaurants and activities suggests it supports a tourist population of much larger. Still, the area is not exploited, and offers all the charm of an Oregon seaside town. Located about 40 mi north of the California border, Gold Beach enjoys a more temperate climate from its other coastal counterparts. At the confluence of the Rogue River, it also boasts world class salmon and steelhead trout fishing. The Pacific Ocean also feeds the area with crab and clams. Gold Beach’s restaurants feature seafood prominently. Festivals are held throughout the year, such as the Curry Fair and the Goldrush Art Festival.
Gold Beach was formed in the 1850s and was originally named Ellensburg, which accounts for its main thoroughfare of the same name, also known as Highway 101. The name was changed when gold was discovered at the mouth of Rogue River, which became the site of hundreds of placer mines. Visitors often feel as they too have struck gold, as Gold Beach has some of the most stunning scenery comprised of ocean waves, river rapids, mountain vistas and endless skies.
